There are a few people living in some of the small or more distant residences that unfortunately we will not be able to provide TV to:

  • Langford old & new hostels
  • 121 Redland Road
  • Rodney Place
  • 97 Woodland Road

We cannot provide TV to residents in those houses as there isn't enough capacity on the relatively small links we have to them. We are very sorry about this.

what about Northwell?

Or OS-X/Loonix users for that matter? ;)

Northwell House is now enabled too.

We have been assured that there will be a mac client by September, although this is probably too late for most.

We have had some luck using the freewire client under both VMware and Parallels.

just want to know if Sinclair House is covered. I have set up the account and firwire, but always ended up with ‘channel of air’. What went wrong?

yunqing – As far as I can tell, Sinclair House is covered. If you are still having problems, please contact the ResNet helpdesk.

I currently do not have a tv tuner for my laptop, but i believe the TV licensing law allows me to watch TV on my laptop as long as it is unplugged from the mains as then it counts as a “portable TV” running on internal batteries (as stated on the TV licensing for students page)and would be covered under my parents license, would this also be the case if i used IPTV with my mains adapter unplugged?

Ken,
My understanding is that you do need a TV license as your computer CAN and probably WILL run on mains ;-)

The link below is not very clear about battery operated equipment but you can always phone them to get an answer (0870 241 5973).

If you can get them to email you then send us a copy.

The exact terms are specified in The Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004, Schedule 1, and refer to a licence:

“(c) for the use anywhere of any television receiver powered solely by its own internal batteries by the licensee or by a person normally living with the licensee at the specified location.”

So the question is: what does it mean by “[a] television receiver powered solely by its own internal batteries” ?

There are, in my view, two possibilities. Either it intends to cover the use of a device which can only ever by powered by internal batteries (i.e. it can’t be run off the mains); or it means a device which can be mains-powered, but isn’t always.

If the former is correct, then your parents’ licence won’t cover you. If the latter, then it will cover you as long as you don’t use it to watch TV with the mains connected.

(You should, of course, check that your parents do actually have a licence!)

Since neither I, nor ResNet, are qualified to offer legal advice, you should follow Mark’s suggestion and contact TV licensing for their position on this. I’d ask them for confirmation in writing, both for your own benefit and to pass on to ResNet.
