Hi Chris, Thanks for the feedback.
The monitoring system manage.resnet.bris.ac.uk is not instant but it is updated hourly, which is not that bad. The reason that it is not updated more frequently is to reduce load on the monitoring and database servers.
We are working on a system to give users a ‘second chance’ but it will have to be done over summer as the ManageMyResNet page is in need of an overhaul first. I doubt that we would give a second chance once a month, probably more like once per term.
As you can see from the table above, the average number of restricted days per restricted user is a mere 1.9 days and the restricted network still gives access to web and email. We would rather the restricted network limit connection speed not what you can do and we are working on this over summer.
I feel that any restrictions we place on users will be seen, by some, as unfair but it is vastly better than the previous do anything, anytime system.

… but it still seems a little off that on the off chance someone did hit just over the limit they suffer for the rest of the week, when there is no instant monitoring facility available for us as users to make use of. The day after system really isn’t anywhere near current enough for adequate assessment of what we are/aren’t using.
Whilst a more current monitoring solution may indeed be more of a long term prospect, in the short term would it not be possible to have a system whereby each user is given one ‘second chance’ per month?
This would surely help ease the element of unfairnesss that undeniably exists in the present setup, whilst at the same time limit the prospect of calculated abuse of the system.
